MACC forecasts help to interpret Seattle haze

51_Biomass45burning_Global_small.gifThe MACC-II forecasts of the smoke plume from large wildfires in Russia have been instrumental in understanding the origin of the smoke/haze impact on the American north-west. The area around Seattle has suffered from significant hazy skies over the last week making people wonder if this was smoke coming from the large fires in Colorado or from some other regions. The MACC-II forecasts of biomass burning aerosol and carbon monoxide have helped to illustrate that this smoke orginated from the large wild fires in Asia and was transported over long distances at altitudes around 3 km, as shown in the figure. The smoke from the Colorado fires has mainly been affecting the Mid-West region. More details can be found here.
