GDA

The Global Data Assimilation (GDA) sub-project is central to the global services of MACC-II.  It has strong interaction with the AER, GHG, GRG, OBS, EMI, FIR, INT, and VAL sub-projects to ensure provision, quality control, and further development of the various global services.  Using its global data assimilation system, GDA will provide the following global services:

  • Near-real-time global monitoring and forecasting - provision of daily analyses and 4-day forecasts of atmospheric composition supporting the regional component of MACC-II as well as downstream service providers
  • Delayed monitoring - global monitoring of greenhouse gases and aerosols at high resolution several months behind real-time to monitor and ultimately assimilate new greenhouse gas and aerosol observations (both space-based and ground-based) providing important feedback to data providers; provide high resolution boundary conditions for regional modelling and flux inversions
  • Reanalyses - reprocessing of past data on atmospheric composition using a stable version of the assimilation system providing a consistent time series of global reactive gases, and aerosol
  • User-targeted forecasts - global targeted forecasts supporting scientific campaigns/studies and space agencies

GDA will also ensure east access to both graphical and data products and supporting information through the dedicated project web site as well as other forms of data portals. Emphasis will lie continuing the provision of the current MACC services, transforming them to fully operational status, and improving or newly developing services based on user input.

To acheive these objectives, GDA has been structured into four work packages.  Each work package is broken down into a number of tasks:

The details of the indivual tasks are covered in the work-package tables included in Part A of the Description of Work, but it can be pointed out here that the work packages follow the logical separation of the sub-project into Coordination (WP71), Research and Development (WP72), and Support (WP73 and WP74).  WP71 coordinates the sub-project and ensures good interaction with the other global sub-projects as well as with ECMWF staff.  WP72 ensures the integration/adaptation of all research developments relevant to the global production streams.  This includes RTD from the other global sub-projects, meteorological RTD performed at ECMWF, and RTD from supporting FP7 projects.  WP73 is responsible for the prototype operational NRT monitoring and forecasting system, the delayed-mode system, and the reanalysis.  This includes significant effort on all technical aspects to run these systems reliably.  Finally, WP74 ensures user-friendly provision of the global services through the web interface and other means of data transfers as well as by providing user support.  WP74 is also responsible for routine quality control by means of monitoring and verification plots for the various atmospheric composition variables.
